He enlarged the pattern to a diameter of 15 3/4" and made the outer rim a circle. His basket was created out of cherry and finished with satin lacquer. Thanks for sending in the project Bruce! As always, we appreciate all submissions of viewers' work!

Nearly nine years ago, at age 15, I finished my first
fretwork clock, the Cottage
Clock by Wildwood Designs. Two years later, I had completed Wildwood
Design’s Queen’s Clock,
and was looking for a project to truly solidify myself as a “great” scroll
sawer –in my mind, that required making a very large fretwork clock. There are
several known large fretwork clocks out there, such as the Dome Clock, York Minster
Cathedral, and Chimes of
Normandy, but the Roman
Cathedral clock struck me as both intricate and visually appealing.

As small projects continued to keep me busy, I delayed plans
for building a large fretwork clock. The idea kept nagging at me though, and two
years later – in the winter of 2012 – the plans were purchased and sitting in
my lap. I had this grand plan to finish the clock before my 21st
birthday. Two years would be plenty of time to finish it right? And completing
it before my 21st would definitely fulfill my desire to prove my
skills as a scroll sawer right?

As I began the feat of cutting the pieces out, I realized I
may have been in over my head. The plan used false plates to construct sections
(basically they are hidden pieces used to increase the strength and bear the
weight of the clock), and I had no idea what a false plate was at the time, nor
did I understand how they were used or why they were important. I continued
cutting out the pieces anyway, planning to deal with the construction aspects
when the time came. A dozen pieces and a couple hundred cuts later, graduation,
work, and college took over my time, and before I knew it, my 21st
birthday had come and gone. Fast-forward a few years to this past Fall, five
years after starting the clock, I was graduated with my Masters degree, and
finally had a bit of time on my hands. After a solid two weeks of hard work, I
found myself rounding off the last few turns and completing the final cut. Five
years after receiving the pattern and making the initial cuts, at age 24, I had
completed the project. My goal of completing a large fretwork clock had come to
fruition.

Now, it was well past my goal of completing it by my 21st
birthday, and I now realize how absurd it was to use the clock as some sort of
“proof” of my scroll sawing capabilities. In fact, making the clock for such a
reason as proving my skills is probably the same reason I didn’t stick it out
and complete it five years ago. Scroll sawing as a hobby is meant to be fun,
not forced. And fun is exactly what the entire process was when I resumed work
on the clock five years later. Working on the clock for fun and for myself,
rather than for proving something to others, is what allowed me to see the
project through to the finish. So despite blowing past my timeline goal, I had
a project I was proud of, and that alone was enough.

Happy new year everyone, and good luck with completing the
projects on your wish list!

After completing my first “chevron”-styled cutting board, I had many people asking me how I was able to make it. Did I have to glue hundreds of little pieces together? Though the process seemed simple to me—cutting and gluing strips in two steps—it was hard to comprehend for others. With the general misunderstanding among so many that don’t have backgrounds in woodworking, I figured there may also be some aspiring woodworkers, and even professionals, that wouldn’t intuitively know how to go about making chevron-style cutting boards. With this post, I’ve tried to put together somewhat of a how-to for making these cutting boards.
The first step for making one of these boards is understanding and planning for the final size of the cutting board you desire. Quite a bit of material will be lost in all of the sawing, especially cutting at angles. For reference, I glued up strips into a plank that was 12” wide and 24” long. My final cutting board, with maple trim around the edges, was about 12” x 16”.
For the board depicted in this tutorial, I used six types of wood: jatoba, maple, wenge, walnut, padauk, and purpleheart. I also used a symmetrical design. After lining up and gluing the strips together into a plank, as if I were making a simple striped cutting board, I planed down the resulting plank and ensured everything was still square. I then set my table saw miter gauge to 30˚. I chose that angle for the sole reason that it was the highest angle I could use and still fit my board between the saw blade and miter gauge without the miter gauge guide falling out of the table saw miter slot (I really wish I had an extension guide for my miter gauge). Because there was still some play in the miter gauge with so little of the guide in the miter slot, I actually used my miter gauge backwards so that more of the guide could be in the miter slot, resulting in no play and accurate cuts. I also clamped a stop block to my fence so that I could accurately determine the thickness of strips I was cutting, but not bind the strips between the fence and blade after being cut. Please never use both the miter gauge and rip fence without stop blocks; binding boards can create very dangerous situations.
Once I had the table saw set up, I began cutting the angled strips. The first cut was to cut off the triangle end-piece. You have to have the full length of the angled cut to use for the final board, so two large triangles will go to waste (saved for other projects). At this point, you could cut all of your strips the same size and have a very nice board. However, I decided to increase in strip width from the outer pieces leading inward. To do so, I cut 4 strips at 1/8” each. Two strips will be paired on the left and right sides of the board. I then cut 4 strips at 1/4” each, again pairing them at each end. I continued to increase in 1/8” increments until I cut a pair of strips at 1” each for the center of the board.
After having all of the angled strips cut, I took every other strip and flip it end over end long-ways, giving the chevron effect. I then re-glued the strips together and clamped overnight. The next day, I used my table saw to straighten the jagged sides of the board and to make sure everything was square again. I then planed it down, sanded it, and added 1” maple trim around the edges with a 1/4” chamfer (a sharp edge to match the sharp angles of the chevron pattern).
Finally, I applied a mixture of pure beeswax and cutting board oil to seal the pores and provide a nice, food-safe finish. Overall, I think these boards stand out from typical glue-up cutting boards for only a few extra steps of work. If you have any other questions about how to make these, please don’t hesitate to ask. Also, as always, please share pictures of your finished products. We will share them on our site, with your consent, of course.

While graduate school has caused my time in the workshop to be minimal, I recently found time to make a plant stand that coupled vibrant contrasting wood slats and a modern black pipe base. Some of you may have seen the photo preview of the project uploaded on our Facebook page (find us and like our page if you haven't already - link on the right panel of this page!). Here are some pictures of the finished table. I used twelve wood species in total with a variety of colors, surrounded by a maple frame. I've now been using exotic woods to make colorful tabletops and cutting boards for over five years. My ideology has always been that using exotic woods rather than dyes creates a purer, more honest piece of woodworking. Telling customers about where the different woods originate from and how the pieces are real wood with no artificial coloring adds to the story and quality of the piece. To me it's similar to using solid hardwood versus veneers for a project (maybe that's an extreme comparison, but you get the point). There is a downside to "staying pure" though. Exotic woods are not only more expensive than using dyes, but they also won't hold their color over time as dyes will (so I'm told...). I have definitely been wary of continuing my use of exotic woods rather than dyes, as I've read more and more about how wood ages and colors change, regardless of the impacts of sunlight. However, I have yet to see significant color changes in projects I've made within the past five years (I know, I know...it can take up to, or more than ten years...), so I suppose until the loss of color results in the true decline in aesthetics of one of my pieces, I will continue to use exotic woods for my projects. Anyway, the pictures of the finished table are below. Let me know what you think of the table, and if you have any opinions on using exotic woods versus dyes!

We've all heard the saying, and by now its become so cliché that most of you probably want nothing to do with it. However, we've decided to make a post with old patterns we'd designed, yet had never posted, and in that collection happened to be patterns for "Live", "Laugh", and "Love".
The patterns are meant to be cut and hung in a row together, but could also work individually. The "Love" pattern has a heart in it, which kind of sets it apart from the other two, so it may suit you to not cut the heart out for the sake of uniformity.
It's all woodworking related anyhow. A while back I posted about the making of exotic hardwood cutting boards. They're a really simple and fast way to make stunning pieces for the kitchen. After my mother asked me to refinish an old cast-iron sewing machine table, I decided to use the idea of the cutting boards and apply it to the project! I sanded and repainted the base, and also made a glue-up tabletop using maple, walnut, wenge, padauk, and purpleheart. She wanted a modern twist to the antique so I thought the glue-up worked perfect.

The use of glue-ups can be used for fretwork projects or any woodworking projects to create stunning and original pieces. Send me pictures of your glue-up projects! Next post will be a pattern, so stay tuned!
The chess pieces are made of popular and redwood. The table was made from mahogany and maple. This was a very difficult project to make because of all the compound cuts. The squares on the table are larger than normal to fit the bug pieces but I think I like it better that way because you have more table space. We made it coffee table size so when we're not playing chess it's a pretty table. Just remember when cutting the chess pieces try to use somewhat soft wood because they are hard to cut. I also wrap my compounds with clear packing tape because it makes it easier to cut." - Tina Cuadra
Many of you have probably already made cutting boards before, and it's a pretty common sense process, but I'm going to walk you through it anyway. I started out just making cutting boards from scraps, but with the demand I had for them, I decided to start making them in "batches". I drove down to my nearest lumber store and purchased about $200 worth of various exotic hardwoods. Wenge, yellowheart, purpleheart, walnut, and maple are my primary choices since they are hard enough to resist slices of the knife. Because I don't own a very nice table saw, I had the lumber company straight-line rip my boards for ten cents per board foot. If you do want to put a straight edge on the boards yourself, I recommend finding a solid piece of angle iron and using that to run through with the boards.

Cutting boards before being planed down.

I make my cutting boards by using a variety of 1/8", 1/2", and 3/4" strips. That being said, the next step is set the table saw fence to 1/8" and run the boards through, creating as many strips as you desire. The same is done with the 1/2" and 3/4" strips. Next the boards are mitered to the length desired, and the strips are glued in whatever pattern is chosen. After the glue dries, the clamps are removed, and the boards are run through the planar to even them out. Next, the boards are mitered to even out the ends, and the edges are routed with a round-over bit.
The finishing of the boards is perhaps the most important part of the process. For my boards, I sand them with 80, 120, and 220 grit sandpaper and then apply a 1:1 mixture of all natural beeswax and food-safe mineral oil. The wax is melted on the stove and the oil is added to it. Doing so not only provides a very smooth, finish and shiny luster, but also a sanitary and anti-bacterial finish. The beeswax fills the pores in the wood, and prevents moisture and bacteria from settling on the board. After vigorously rubbing the oil/wax mixture into the wood, I let the
boards sit for 10 minutes before wiping off the excess with a towel. And with that, the boards are finished! I don't put routed grooves in my boards because people have told me that they don't like when vegetable pieces among other things get caught in the groove as they slide the pieces off the board. I also don't put rubber feet on my boards so that they may be used for cutting on one side, and displayed on the other side.
It's almost Christmas and you know what that means...GIFTS! Not only does this mean receiving gifts, but if you're like me, it's the busiest time of year in the workshop. I'm not one of those people who cut Christmas gifts in September!
This gumball machine pattern is perfect for a child or even an office desk! I cut mine out of two different woods to dress it up a bit. I used padouk to give it a nice color, and white oak to provide a lighter colored wood. Also, make this pattern your own! I made my lever pretty simple, but there are unlimited possibilities. Cut the person's name in the lever perhaps?
For the past six months, I've been out of the workshop. Yea I know...hard to imagine! On May 17th of this year, my garage caught fire, and unfortunately, I lost my entire workshop. Since then, I have worked with insurance to submit a list of every tool and screw I lost, so that I may replace them and have them covered. Now, as everyone tells you, be sure to take pictures of everything you have! I had thought about it and thought about it, but "never had time" for it. Well, the day came when I needed the pictures, and I didn't have them. Listing would have been much easier had I had them, but instead, I was forced to sort through more than a foot of ash and try to decipher what tools the molten pieces of plastic used to be.

So how did it start? Behind my workbench, there were only two outlets. On my workbench I had my drill press, sander, Dremel, and scroll saw plugged in. In order to accommodate all of the tools, I bought a heavy duty surge protector (encased in metal). And yes...it was a surge protector, not a power strip. The surge protector gave me 5 extra outlets, into which I plugged in my tools. With the two extra outlets, I switched out tools such as my dust collector, table saw, sander, planer, etc. With all of the tools being plugged into and unplugged from the two extra outlets, the prongs inside the surge protector began to weaken and bend inward. By bending inward, they began to arc across, generating heat. The surge protector then put more energy into insulating the "surge" and therefore generated more heat (not sure of the proper wording/explanation here, but you get the point). The result was a circular pattern of the surge protector overheating itself. Thus, the insides of the surge protector began melting. It then fell off of the wall to the ground and started the fire.

At 9 in the morning I walked through the garage before heading to the farm, and smelled something funny (I'll never forget the smell of an electrical fire now). I walked around and checked everything, even my surge protector. The light was still working on it, and the smell didn't seem any stronger around it, so I ignored it. I was in a hurry, so after checking everything twice, I took off. At about 10:30 a.m. I received a call that my house was on fire and I needed to come home immediately. By the time I got there, the garage was gone as well as a small part of the second story of the house. Later, I would be told by the state Fire Marshal that indeed the surge protector would appear to be working on the outside, even if the insides were completely melted.

I guess if you can take anything from this, please don't use surge protectors when you are plugging and unplugging often! They will wear out and have the potential of causing a fire, no matter how quality they are! They are generally fine when used with TV's and computers because once they are plugged in, the surge protector isn't touched. Although nobody reads the fine print, especially for surge protectors, it does actually say they are only meant for temporary use, up to 90 days. In that time, additional wiring should be added to the home/office (I know...ridiculous). Also, as mentioned before, please take pictures of all that you have. If not everything, at least photo the contents of your garage since that is where the vast majority of fires start.

Upon rebuilding the garage, a total of 8 outlets on two different circuits were installed behind my workbench. I'm slowly getting all of my tools replaced and my workshop back in order.

Just a quick warning for everyone: make sure you do not use open grained wood for the 3D keychains. Yea, you are probably thinking "duh!", but it was a rookie mistake on my part! Open grained woods (especially oak, which I used) split easily. With the keychains being fragile, they break very easily if a very solid hardwood is not used. I have successfully done keychains in purpleheart, yellowheart, wenge, and even padouk although its a softwood. All have lasted a very long time and still haven't broken. I made one out of walnut which lasted a long time, but eventually busted out. After a visit to Keim Lumber in Charm, OH (which I still have to upload pictures of), I bought some small pieces of Bacote and Black & White Ebony ($$$), and made some keychains out of those. I bought a 3/4" x 3/4" pen blank in the B&W Ebony to use for the keychain, which turned out to work perfect. It is a beautiful wood with brilliant color and texture.

Today I wanted to upload pictures of my intarsia Nativity scene. I made this back in early December, and used the patterns from Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts magazine. The patterns were given as ornaments for your Christmas tree, but I decided to use them to create my own scene. I made doubles of some animals (3 camels, 3 sheep) and made variants of the patterns as well (sitting sheep and camel). I designed my own stable and put a light inside, as well as a 2 layer base made from 3/4" aspen. Aspen is cheap, and because it won't be touched much, its softness won't be a problem. I flipped some of the patterns so that the animals could face both ways. For Christmas I received the Razertip SS-D10 pyrography system, so I burned in details on the Nativity set afterwards.

My Nativity just shows how patterns can be adjusted to fit your needs. There is no need to copy a pattern exactly. Edit it to make it your own! I encourage you to do that to my patterns as well! And when done, send pictures to me so I can show off your work and help inspire others to personalize their work!
To come: I'll try to post the patterns of the animals that I custom made soon. It's March, I know, but it doesn't hurt to start on a set now! And I'll have to post the patterns while I have access to them here at home (I'm currently on Spring Break). I never made an actual pattern for stable, but I'll post detailed pictures of it for you to look off of in creating your own version. I'll also try to post a review of my Razertip tool for the pyrographers out there, as well as a few beginner projects I did.
This cross design was inspired by the Liturgical books of my church. My youth group decided to meet together at church and attend Ash Wednesday as a group. I wanted something to remember that day, and as I walked out of the pew, I spotted a design on the front of the Roman Missal. I took a picture, hand drew a back design, and had Eric make the pattern on Corel. This is the result. I am quite pleased with the way it turned out. I used 1/2 inch black walnut for the back and 1/4 inch white maple for the top layer. I'm planning on making one with a maple back and purpleheart front soon.
Here are a few more wooden pendant patterns. They are one of my biggest sellers. I often do mine in exotic woods such as bloodwood, yellow heart, or purple heart for a stunning effect. Please feel free to make changes to these patterns to make them your own custom design and send us pictures with your results. The only way youngsters and others can get started is by freely sharing patterns. That is one of the main purposes of this blog. As I have used other peoples' free patterns, I wish to do the same and post mine free. These patterns are more intricate to really test your skills. The "Love" pendant in the picture is made of purple heart and the "pine-cone/fossil" pendant is made of walnut. I also hand sanded mine to make them round and sort of sphere shaped.
Scroll saw vases are one of my favorite patterns to design. Every slight change in the curve make a whole new look. They can be used for decorative pieces or actually used for flowers if a narrow glass is added to the inside. The construction of the vase is pretty self explanatory. Many people wonder where they can purchase exotic woods for sawing such as yellowheart, purpleheart, wenge, bloodwood, etc. Many local lumber yards only sell general lumber, not carrying these exotic woods. Today I took a trip down to Frank Miller Lumber, and let me tell you, it was something to see. If you are a woodworker, this is a place you want to visit. I was purchasing some exotic species of wood for 3 intarsia projects I'm doing for a school summer art class. You can buy many exotic species by the board feet. I was able to get everything I needed plus much much more. Just getting into sawing, or just want to try some other species of wood? There is a section of wood that costs only 50 cents per pound and also a scrap bin of free wood. Thick, thin, wide, or narrow, they have it all. This was my first trip there, but already I'm planning on going back sometime soon.

Frank Miller Lumber is located in Union City, IN.
With a little tweaking and designing, it can be used as a free standing picture frame as well. If a quarter inch rabbet is added to the inside of the square on the back of the frame, the picture and glass can be inserted. Staples can be inserted behind the picture to hold it into the frame. The picture above is from the mission trip to Haiti Eric and I went on last summer. Our group was with each other for over a week and practically became a family. We visited 5 months after the earthquake (our trip was planned before the quake) and when we arrived, it looked like the day after the earthquake. We tried to do our part with what little time we had, including building a house for a homeless family. Now you may say "Well that is nothing, there are millions of homeless people down there; there is no way to make a difference." Well let me say this: I'm sure we made a difference to that family. Also, I am currently sponsoring a boy named Djeff who lives in an orphanage. The money pays for him to attend school and for basic necessities.
I've been working on art projects and english work for next school year already. Eric was able to complete this pattern. Soon we will be moving are patterns from Google hosting to a new setup. This will allow users with newer browsers to open the PDF without saving it. We will also try to update and change the gallery page. Please remember not to hotlink to our patterns.Jeremy Wallshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14868421987880567531noreply@blogger.com5
